press operation

The print action of the Whelan Press is truly unique. The print roller advances to the edge of the plate and climbs the plate smoothly-effortlessly, then rolls gently off the trailing edge. With a stationary press bed your artwork does not move. Your paper and plate stay where you put them.

Press Operation Techniques

Thumb1Register the plate using the grid and place on the bed cover.
Thumb2Lay paper and blankets down.

Thumb3Apply pressure by rotating the pressure wheels clockwise to the desired setting.
Thumb4Advance roller over plate.

Depending on the amount of force being used and the profile of the plate edge, you can climb plates up to 1/2" in thickness. For printing Glass Plate, Linoleum or Woodblock you may use a template or print paper up and plate down.

Print Woodblocks and Glass Plates two ways: paper up and plate down or plate up and paper down. The self-leveling print roller and pressure gauges make transitioning from an Etchings to woodblocks a snap. Reset and repeat pressure settings quickly and precisely.
