Every press component was studied, challenged and tested, from the moving press bed to the large diameter print rollers. From design to fabrication, the Whelan Press is unique. Answering the creative needs and safety concerns of artists required new thinking, a paradigm shift in press design. A radical new design also required the use of new materials and manufacturing techniques. But re-engineering 15th century printmaking technology and incorporating innovative materials was just the beginning.

What is more important than good design and construction? We don't take shortcuts and we only use the best materials. Our rollers and press bed are made from solid stainless steel. On other parts we use more expensive cold rolled steel with finishes that are made to last. Even the screws we use are solid stainless steel or high strength 880 alloy and our lock washers are hardened steel. We are printmakers and we hand build each press as if it were our own.

We are grateful to the countless creative artists and printmakers working in diverse mediums whose suggestions helped us in developing our press. We continue to gain new insights and remain committed to making the Whelan Press the artist's choice.
